I'm getting the distinct impression this season could be a very wet one. Whilst nursing my 'infamous' strain, and leaving my 'less selfless' club mates to do the honourable thing for the training day, me, myself and me girls headed to Tiverton to watch a small army of guys compete for the club. In what was a STAR studded event with elite athletes, the 220 2005 national age group athlete of the year & the 220 2005 coach of the year! Lucky the weather was kind and the sun shone almost all day (apart from the first 9 hours of daylight of course!) I think this was the highest standard of swimming I've ever seen at a pool based Triathlon, with no fewer than 10 people swimming sub 5 mins! Most of those swam in the 2nd from last wave and in lane one there was Pete Freedman (Taunton 2005 winner, now back to his best) and the current World Student games champion Harry Wiltshire. Complete chalk and cheese, Pete swimming like a torpedo hardly breaking the water and Harry splashing around like a badly controlled jet ski! But both left the pool in a staggering 4:24 side by side! Our very own Holly Lawrence left in an equally impressive 5:00, swimming toe to toe with all of her more experienced and older rivals. Rich Brady, the previous Irish Ironman champion chased & caught the elite pair on the bike and was closely followed in by Doug Hall who also out biked the front two. But the run saw the race won by Wiltshire in a sprint finish from Freedman with the pair taking 1 min 30 out of their nearest rivals on foot. Our chaps & chapesses all braved the elements with the following results – Nick racing for the first time in two years showed his season’s intent with a top 20 finish, with Dunc setting his fastest ever swim and quite rightly chuffed with his overall performance. Didn’t get chance to talk to the others so sorry I haven’t commented on your races.

Ps I’m sure Mr Bawler wore a very dark pair of summer shades - I guess if you’re cool you’re cool whatever the weather! Even cooler in his new club kit – along with Mr Croker they looked totally bad! - Enough street lingo from me for sure! |
